Consumer Unit Upgrade in Sidcup

The Brief

A homeowner in Sidcup got in touch about their existing fuse box. The board was of an older design and did not provide RCD protection, which modern wiring regulations require to help protect against electric shock and faults. Before fitting anything new, we recommended a full Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) so we could see the true state of the installation and put any issues right, rather than simply swapping the board over.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Carried out an EICR: A full inspection and test of the existing installation to identify any faults, damaged wiring, or non-compliant work that needed attention before the upgrade.
• Resolved the faults found: We corrected the issues the EICR revealed so the installation was safe and sound before the new board went in.
• Installed a modern RCBO consumer unit: A new board with an individual RCBO on each circuit, so a fault on one circuit does not take out the rest of the property.
• Added surge protection: A surge protection device was fitted to help protect connected equipment against voltage spikes.
• Tested and commissioned: Every circuit was tested and verified to confirm the installation met current wiring regulations.
• Certificated and labelled: The new board was clearly labelled and the work was fully certificated, giving the homeowner a documented record of the installation.

The Result

The property now has a modern consumer unit with RCD protection on every circuit and surge protection for added peace of mind. The previous installation had reached the end of its life, and the upgrade brings the electrics in line with current standards. The homeowner has a fully tested, certificated and clearly labelled board, along with the EICR documenting the condition of the installation.
